Este trabajo explora la presencia en el Quijote del antiguo debate sobre la miseria y la dignidad humanas, así como la de algunas imágenes a él asociadas. La seria superación por parte de don Quijote de su origen mediocre, el simbolismo de su cuerpo penitencial, molido y trascendido por su voluntad de acción, se enmarcan en un sistema capaz, además, de incluir la risa y la distancia irónica, desde el momento en que las bonae litterae han sido sustituidas por libros de caballerías o por textos de un humanismo trasnochado. El estudio se completa con algunos enlaces que colocan estas ideas sobre el fondo fascinante de la literatura emblemática.

This study explores the presence in Don Quijote of the ancient debate on human misery and dignity, as well as some images related to this debate. The protagonist’s ability to rise above his undistinguished origins, the symbolism of his penitential body, beaten down and transcended by his will to act, are framed within a system also capable of including laughter and ironic distancing, from the moment when the bonae litterae are replaced by romances of chivalry or by texts of outmoded Humanism. The study concludes with some connections that situate these ideas against the fascinating background of emblematic literature.
