Pierangelo Barone L’irrazionalità della violenza in adolescenza: un effetto indesiderato della rimozione del conflitto

The adolescent violence, again in the spotlight of the chronicle, is an issue that passes longitudinally through the different eras of Western history: the medieval chronicle is rich in references to the disordered and violent nature of the younger generation, toward which there is a common repressive solicitude that goes on beyond the Medieval Era, up to fit in disciplinary dispositives of Modern Institutions. But what is new in the adolescents’ violence today?
The pedagogical hypothesis that I want to propose it is based on an atypical point of view: there is a deep rift between the meaning that the youth violence has assumed in ages past and the irrationality of violence with which some adolescents respond to the collective social and existential distress in the current era. We are faced with a violence which surprises for the irrationality and groundless; an irrationality that certainly reveals a vacuum – wrongly explained as a nihilistic attitude due to the gaps of the new generations – but a vacuum of symbolic type, that refers to the absence of signification and recognition, caused by the denial of the conflict as required driving force of the change and agent of the passage of the “baton” between generations.
